Deer are familiar mammals the world over. There are 43 species of deer, recognizable by their hoofed feet and many-pointed antlers. Deer are native to every continent except Antarctica and Australia.
Did you know? In some deer species, only the males have antlers, while in others, both males and females sport these impressive appendages. Antlers are an extension of the skull and are made of bone. Yet, old antlers are shed and new ones are regrown each year. The antlers are covered by a special skin called velvet. Male deer with antlers are called bucks or stags, and the antlers themselves may be referred to as racks. Detached antlers are called sheds, and these may be collected by "shed hunters" for decoration, carving, or other uses.
Sometimes, animal skulls are used to indicate desolation and danger. For example, a bovine or deer skull might appear in a scene of a drought-stricken desert or by a polluted river. More often, though, these animal skulls are used to represent specific human lifestyles. At times, the society symbolized may be tribal, subsisting off the animal, and perhaps using its bones in religious contexts. Deer skulls are also used to represent rural North America and may be displayed as trophies by hunters.

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Deer Skull
How to Draw a Great Looking Deer Skull for Kids, Beginners, and Adults - Step 1
1. Begin by enclosing the outline of the skull using a long curved line. Notice the bulges of the eye sockets.

2. Draw a "W" shaped line in the middle of the skull. From its uppermost points, draw an "S" shaped line alongside each eye socket. From its lowest points, extend short straight lines.

3. Use curved lines to enclose elongate irregular shapes at the bottom of the skull. Inside each, enclose a narrow oval to indicate the nasal cavity.

4. Draw two parallel curved lines across each eye socket, giving them a three-dimensional appearance.

5. Draw a long and short straight line along the middle of the skull. At the top of the long line, draw three short straight lines in a starburst pattern.

6. Draw the back of the antler, erasing as necessary. Use two curved lines to enclose a rounded shape. Draw another curved line across one side of it, giving the shape the appearance of a short, squat cylinder.

7. Draw another cylindrical shape to mirror the first, erasing as necessary. Use two curved lines to outline the shape, and a third to give it a three-dimensional appearance.

8. Begin sketching the antlers. Extend a long curved line from each cylinder. Then, draw a shorter curved line that meets the first at a sharp point. From its base, extend another curved line to lengthen the antler. Draw a shorter curved line to complete the point.

9. Complete each antler. Draw another point consisting of two curved lines. Then, extend a curved line downward, and bend it in toward the head. From the base of the antler, extend a curved line that runs roughly parallel to the existing side of the antler. Allow it to meet the final extension at a sharp point.
Color Your Deer Skull Drawing
Color your cartoon deer skull. Most often, dry bones are depicted in white or cream. The antlers may be grey or brown in color.
